The CM Fall Welcome Event is THIS THURSDAY! Please RSVP with Anyssa or at admin@scmef.org. If you intend to go (and you really should go), RSVP now! Also, in case you live under a rock, the Sac State CM Healthcare Team placed second nationally, showing once again that we kick butt. Give a high five to Adam Leon, Mike DeGroot, Ray Pippin, Andrey Dzyuba, Scott Davis and Teddy Hanford for representing us well. Job Leads Stacy and Witbeck is on campus TONIGHT (Tuesday, Oct. 21) from 5:00 to 8:00PM in the Gillott Room (3014 Riverside). Bring your resumes tonight or e-mail it to Caroline Kim (ckim@stacywitbeck.com). For more info on Stacy and Witbeck, click here. As stated last week, be sure to check my updated list of open positions here. Update your resumes and think about creating a LinkedIn profile if you haven't already done so. If you have, update it. If you're interested, send me an invitation to connect and I'll put a link to your profile on the Talent Exchange page. If you are looking for advice on how to improve your resume, click here for an article I wrote a year ago. What's Going on in Classes Abbreviated week because I'll be traveling. That said, there's still work to be done. CM 121: Exam debrief on Tuesday. No class on Thursday. Lab this week will be a takeoff on concrete masonry units and brick. There will be more details in class. This is a take home assignment. CM124 Lab: We will be completing the in-class estimating assignment that we have been working on intermittently over the past few weeks. The actual assignment has been posted to SacCT. CM 126: This week will bring the conclusion to presentations. Our last four will be on Wednesday. I will be posting an assignment whereby you will be typing your presentation peer reviews. I will copy and paste all of the reviews and distributing them to the appropriate speaker. The final review you receive will include the reviews from your classmates, a review from me, your grade for the reviews you performed, and your final grade. If you missed one of the presenters you were supposed to review, leave the section for that presenter blank. I have been taking roll, so if you weren't in class, then don't submit a review.

They tend to be interactive with the audience and are likely looking to hire PEs, so be ready to participate. No class on Wednesday. CM Department News
Job Leads Be sure to check my updated list of open positions here. One of my favorite things about this job is when former students come back to Sac State to hire current students. Alums from BAGS, Rudolph & Sletten and Clark Construction have open positions. Hiring season is officially here! Along those lines, polish your resumes and think about creating a LinkedIn profile if you haven't already done so. If you have, update it. If you're interested, send me an invitation to connect and I'll put a link to your profile on the Talent Exchange page. What's Going on in Classes CM 121: On Tuesday we will be discussing reinforcing steel and masonry. However, before diving into that, I will give you more background on the St. Francis High School Dining Hall project. There have been several good questions in lab and I finally realized that I have given you very little background on the project. Thursday's class will be on structural steel and miscellaneous metals. In lab this week, you will be estimating the slab on grade for the SFHS Dining Hall. You will perform an estimate that includes a fully detailed estimate for the placement and finishing of concrete (that means takeoffs and detailed estimate of the MOLES). CM124 Lab: Not exactly sure yet. However, we are likely going to be heading to the Downtown Arena project next week, which will be very awesome. Here's what it looks like as of today: CM 126: Class has been CANCELED on Monday because I will be at the Tricorp Hearn golf tournament. However, so we don't miss a step, I am posting a group assignment that will be due next Monday (October 13th). See SacCT for details. On Wednesday, we will get back to PRESENTATIONS! We will start promptly at 1:30. Not to get too far ahead, but the following Monday, Heman Chand and Jovan Petrovic from Whiting-Turner will giving our second guest lecture.

Job Leads Be sure to check my updated list of open positions here. What's Going on in Classes CM 121: On Tuesday we will be discussing the cost of labor. On Thursday, we'll start talking about the cost of materials. Lab this week will include estimating footings. You will perform an estimate that includes a fully detailed estimate for the excavation and placement of concrete (that means takeoffs and detailed estimate of the MOLES) for the St. Francis High School Dining Hall. Once again, this is a big scope of work for a lab period, so eat a healthy lunch and get plenty of sleep the nigh before. CM124 Lab: Not sure. We'll all find out on Monday. But I think it's a good idea for you to bring your PPE to campus just in case. CM 126: PRESENTATIONS! We will start promptly at 1:30 and we have a lot to cover, so be on time! You will also be providing peer feedback to one-another. Presentations are scheduled for Monday and Wednesday. The order for each day will be revealed that day. In other words, show up. Job Leads Be sure to check my updated list of open positions here. What's Going on in Classes CM 121: On Tuesday we will be discussing how to determine the productivity of labor. This is a major focus of this class and will be on the first exam (guaranteed). On Thursday, we'll start talking about estimating concrete. Lab this week will include estimating sitework. You will perform an estimate for various sitework elements and means for determining costs (including doing a detailed estimate of the MOLES components, using past subcontractor quotes, and an estimating guide). We will also be starting to estimate our first real project, the St. Francis High School Dining Hall. That's right: it's about to get real. CM124 Lab: Gareth has a cool site lined up on Monday at Prairie City Road and Willard Drive in Folsom, but the site only works for Monday's section. So, if you're in Wednesday's section, I HIGHLY ENCOURAGE you to attend the Monday lab section field trip. Bring proper PPE. If you cannot meet in Monday's section for the site visit, you will meet with me on Wednesday and do something much lamer. CM 126: Like the Navy SEALS say, "The only easy day was yesterday." This week is even more jam packed than last week. On Monday we will be talking contracts and subcontracts and many restrictions they impose or create, including "Buy American" clauses and utilization of local labor. We will also be discussing the St. Derek High School case so read it tonight. It was posted in SacCT and emailed to you on Friday. On Wednesday we will finish up contracts if necessary. We will also be discussing negotiating, a skill you will need to develop if you want to be successful in the construction industry. If that's not enough, we will also be discussing another case study that I will post on Monday. Get ready because we're about to go turbo. CM Department News
