Things are really picking up. Be sure to check my updated list of open positions here. Five new employers/open positions have been added.

Update your resumes and think about creating a LinkedIn profile if you haven't already done so. If you have, update it. If you're interested, send me an invitation to connect and I'll put a link to your profile on the Talent Exchange page. If you are looking for advice on how to improve your resume, click here for an article I wrote a year ago.

What's Going on in Classes

Not sure you noticed, but the semester is more than half over!

CM 121: We have a lot of material to cover. This week's lab is on structrual steel for SFHS Dining Hall. Given that, we will talk about structural steel. I will also try to discuss masonry to build on last week's lab. If all goes well, we will also discuss framing and drywall ahead of next week's lab.

CM124 Lab: We will be heading to a Granite project in El Dorado Hills. The exact address is 281 Green Valley Road (enter on access road at the intersection of Green Valley Road and Sophia Parkway. The site has limited space, so carpooling is important. PPE are absolutely required.

CM 126: This week will bring the conclusion to presentations (for real this time). Our last four will be on Monday. I have posted an assignment requiring you to type your presentation peer reviews. I will copy and paste all of the reviews and distributing them to the appropriate speaker. The final review you receive will include the reviews from your classmates, a review from me, your grade for the reviews you performed, and your final grade.

If you missed one of the presenters you were supposed to review, leave the section for that presenter blank. I have been taking roll, so if you weren't in class, then don't submit a review. The assignment is due on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, we will be having Jeff Messana from Sprig Electric coming to class to discuss managing subcontractors. Please be on time. Jeff has worked on some cool projects (Sprig has done a ton of work for Google) and he's a good guy with a good perspective on project management.

What's Going on in Classes

Abbreviated week because I'll be traveling. That said, there's still work to be done.

CM 121: Exam debrief on Tuesday. No class on Thursday. Lab this week will be a takeoff on concrete masonry units and brick. There will be more details in class. This is a take home assignment.

CM124 Lab: We will be completing the in-class estimating assignment that we have been working on intermittently over the past few weeks. The actual assignment has been posted to SacCT.

CM 126: This week will bring the conclusion to presentations. Our last four will be on Wednesday. I will be posting an assignment whereby you will be typing your presentation peer reviews. I will copy and paste all of the reviews and distributing them to the appropriate speaker. The final review you receive will include the reviews from your classmates, a review from me, your grade for the reviews you performed, and your final grade.

Be sure to check my updated list of open positions here. One of my favorite things about this job is when former students come back to Sac State to hire current students. Alums from BAGS, Rudolph & Sletten and Clark Construction have open positions. Hiring season is officially here!

Along those lines, polish your resumes and think about creating a LinkedIn profile if you haven't already done so. If you have, update it. If you're interested, send me an invitation to connect and I'll put a link to your profile on the Talent Exchange page.

What's Going on in Classes

CM 121: On Tuesday we will be discussing reinforcing steel and masonry. However, before diving into that, I will give you more background on the St. Francis High School Dining Hall project. There have been several good questions in lab and I finally realized that I have given you very little background on the project. Thursday's class will be on structural steel and miscellaneous metals. In lab this week, you will be estimating the slab on grade for the SFHS Dining Hall. You will perform an estimate that includes a fully detailed estimate for the placement and finishing of concrete (that means takeoffs and detailed estimate of the MOLES).

CM124 Lab: Not exactly sure yet. However, we are likely going to be heading to the Downtown Arena project next week, which will be very awesome. Here's what it looks like as of today:

CM 126: Class has been CANCELED on Monday because I will be at the Tricorp Hearn golf tournament. However, so we don't miss a step, I am posting a group assignment that will be due next Monday (October 13th). See SacCT for details. On Wednesday, we will get back to PRESENTATIONS! We will start promptly at 1:30. Not to get too far ahead, but the following Monday, Heman Chand and Jovan Petrovic from Whiting-Turner will giving our second guest lecture.
